THE LAB

The Race Designs Lab is research and development node for proprietary material systems and engineering solutions that exist in the tension between pursuit and perfection. Born from this friction is GHOST-SPEC, a developmental material class for agents of chaos. Race Designs was built on a recursive loop: the track as metaphor for existence. Friction as the only honest teacher. The human body as the original high-performance machine. GHOST-SPEC is the physical translation of that loop – chaos and order as structural logic – defining how an object moves through friction, gravity, and time by forcing two fundamentally hostile materials to behave as a single, articulated system. The Lab exists disinterested in making things look fast but instead making things that survive what fast demands.

GHOST-SPEC

GHOST-SPEC exists at the intersection of extreme metallurgy and bio-mechanical architecture. Not a coating or finish, GHOST-SPEC is a developmental material class driven by our proprietary dual-material system. A study of the material afterlife, diamonds are a girl’s best friend and carbon’s most eternal crystalline state. Dissolved into a specialized stainless matrix until it behaves like something that should not exist at room temperature. The result became a hybrid alloy and composite system engineered for brutalist articulation, specular reflection, and wear resistance that makes conventional materials look plush.

• GHOST: A carbon-locked martensitic-hybrid stainless steel alloy created through the controlled dissolution of nickel-bonded diamond grit into a spec stainless substrate. The process transforms a ductile, relatively soft austenitic steel into a high-hardness matrix capable of extreme gouge and abrasion resistance while retaining a liquid, mirror-grade specular finish.

• GHOST TECH: The composite counterpart — thin skins of the hardened alloy bonded to a 3K twill carbon fiber core via aerospace-grade structural adhesive film. The laminate solves the fundamental conflict between the alloy’s need for hardness and the requirement for articulated, fatigue-resistant movement in wearable and vehicular applications.

THE CHAOS

Standard stainless cannot simply be “made harder” without sacrificing the very properties that make it useful. Introducing carbon at the levels required demands a non-traditional carbon source and a thermal profile that conventional heat treatment cannot deliver. The resulting martensitic structure is so aggressive that traditional subtractive methods are impossible once hardness is achieved — forcing reliance on non-contact processes such as wire electrical discharge machining for final geometry.

When the alloy is then integrated into a carbon-fiber laminate, a new set of contradictions appear: severe coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch, galvanic corrosion risk at the metal-composite interface, and the need for a dielectric bond that can survive both the curing cycle and the dynamic loads of human movement or high-speed impact.

These are not problems to be designed around. They are the design. Together they form a material architecture designed for exoskeletal chassis, spinal harnesses, and high-velocity impact structures where conventional composites fail under localized trauma and conventional metals fail under weight or corrosion constraints.

AGENTS OF UNREASONABLE

Alloy production, thermal treatment, and laminate construction pathways have been identified and tested. GHOST-SPEC remains in active research and development as it relates to thermodynamic modeling and process mapping. Our primary engineering constraints — phase transformation control, interfacial stability, and post-hardening manufacturability — are now the active focus of ongoing work.
